January 1999:

Started to set up my reef tank. I first worked on the "hardware" - building the plinth which arrived as a "flat pack", installing the electrical distribution panels, RCCBs and plumbing.

Two key concerns to address early on were related to the weight of the entire set-up (over a ton with water!):

1. Ensure that the floorboards under the tank were solid.
2. Ensure that once the tank was sited I could do everything without access behind the tank - there is no way to move the tank when it is full of water.

I also started to purchase the necessary filtering equipment and ancillary components such as:

3 large (7 gallon tubs) for moving water and preparing water changes.
A second smaller canister filter filled with activated carbon & nitrate sponge to filter tapwater.
